Becoming a Stronger Disciple
(Mark 6:1-6a) Jesus left
there and went to His hometown, accompanied by His disciples. When the Sabbath came, He began to teach in
the synagogue, and many who heard Him were amazed. “Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given Him,
that He even does miracles! Isn’t this
the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son
and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren’t His sisters here with us?” And they took offense at Him.
Jesus said to them, “Only in his hometown, among his relatives and in
his own house is a prophet without honor.”
He could not do any miracles there, except lay His hands on a few sick
people and heal them. And He was amazed
at their lack of faith.
HOW A DISCIPLE EXCELS
We want to be proactive in our growth as
disciples.
1. Lots of AWE
A. Awe:
A feeling of wonder, fear, and
respect inspired by something mighty or majestic.”
B. I
want to be enormously awed by Jesus.
(Ezekiel 38:20) “The fish
of the sea, the birds of the air, the beasts of the field, every creature that
moves along the ground, and all the people on the face of the earth will
tremble at My presence.”
(Exodus 15:11) Who among the gods is like you, O Lord? Who is like You - majestic in holiness,
awesome in glory, working wonders?
(Job 25:2)
Dominion and awe belong to God; He established order in the heights of heaven.
(Isaiah 6:3)
Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of His glory.
(Mark 6:3) “Isn’t this the
carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and
the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon?
Aren’t His sisters here with us?”
And they took offense at Him.
C. Do
I stand in awe of Jesus?
2. Lots of HONOR
A. Honor: To treat or regard with honor or respect.
B. I
want to “show” Jesus that I honor and respect Him.
(5:22) Then one of the
synagogue rulers, named Jairus, came there.
Seeing Jesus, he fell at His feet.
(5:33) Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her,
came and fell at His feet and, trembling with fear, told Him the whole truth.
C. Am
I honoring Jesus?
3. Lots of FAITH
(6:5) He
could not do any miracles there, except lay His hands on a few sick people and
heal them. And He was amazed at their lack
of faith.
A. Faith: to relinquish trust in oneself and transfer that trust to someone or something else.
B. I want to relinquish trust in myself - and transfer that trust to Jesus.
C. Am I trusting Jesus?
