“TEACH US TO PRAY”

Jesus gave His disciples an outline around which to build their time alone with God.

(Matthew 6:11) “Give us today our daily bread.”

PROVIDING

God wants to provide for all our needs.

1.                  CONCERNS

A.    This answers the question, “WHAT – What does God want to provide for us?  (He wants to provide for all our concerns.)

B.     “Daily bread” reminded the disciples of:

i.   “Manna” from heaven.

ii. The centerpiece of their daily meals.

iii.                  All the practical concerns of life.

2.                  CONTENTMENT

A.    This answers the question, “WHY – Why does God want us to bring our concerns to Him?  (He wants to give us contentment.)

(Matthew 5:25) Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear.  (27) Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?  (28) And why do you worry about clothes?  (31) So do not worry, saying, “What shall we eat?” or “What shall we drink?” or “What shall we wear?”  (34) Therefore do not worry.

B.     Three things to remember about contentment:

i.   Contentment comes after praise.

(Philippians 4:6) Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving (PRAISE), present your requests to God.

ii. Contentment comes before provision.

(Philippians 4:7) And (then) the PEACE of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

“My contentment gets overshadowed

by my obsession for results.”

iii.                  Contentment gives way to provision.

(Matthew 7:9-11) Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone?  Or if he asks for a fish will give him a snake?  If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask Him?

(Philippians 4:19) My God will meet all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus.

3.                  CONTINUOUS

A.    This answers the question, “HOW – How do we pray about our concerns?”  (Continuously!)

B.     Two important things to remember:

i.   Spend time alone with God every day.

“Give us TODAY our DAILY bread.”

ii. Spend time alone with God in the morning.

(Matthew 6:11) Give us today our daily BREAD.

(John 6:35) I am the BREAD of life.  He who comes to me will never go hungry.
